Eclipse SVN backwards compatibility? [message #1602702] Thu, 05 February 2015 18:59 Go to next message

We're using SVN 1.6 on a Linux (Debian) server and am trying to get Eclipse Subversion to work with it, but it appears I can only install the 1.7 and 1.8 versions, but I'm not sure if those will break our SVN 1.6 code/.svn files.

What should I do?

The later svn client will want to update your local working copy from 1.6, since the working copy format changed between 1.6 and 1.7/1.8. That's not a problem by itself, but the side effect is that any other svn client that is only at 1.6 level would no longer be able to wok with that working copy.

By the way, if you wanted to instead install Subclipse 1.6, here is the update site URL: http://subclipse.tigris.org/update_1.6.x

I'm not able to update my local working copy from 1.6; that's not my decision and they're already aware that it's outdated. All I care about is whether Eclipse Subversion 1.7 or 1.8 will work with an SVN 1.6 install, and it sounds like you're saying it will no problem, so it doesn't matter whether anybody will want to update their local working copy, unless I'm reading what you're saying wrong.

I realize I can manually install Subversion 1.6 for Eclipse, but it says it's for Eclipse 3.x and I'm using 4.x, and I think I would need to either use an older version of Eclipse or risk problems, as well as turning off auto-updates.

The original question is if Eclipse Subversion 1.7/1.8 will work with an SVN 1.6 install and not break code or the .svn file/folder structure.

I think all subversion clients will insist on updating your working copies from 1.6 (not 100% sure, but pretty sure), otherwise it can't work with them. For example, SmartSVN does the same thing.
By the way, I've used Subversive and Subclipse 1.6 in Eclipse 4.x (Kepler and Luna) without any problems.

This is what I read about 1.8 backwards-compatibility: http://subversion.apache.org/docs/release-notes/1.8.html#compatibility

1.7 backwards-compatibility with 1.6: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8010996/will-tortoisesvn-1-7-work-properly-against-a-svn-1-6-repository

It appears that the newer versions will work with 1.6 but new features may not... my only concerns are newer features causing problems if I run them unknowingly or accidentally (I haven't worked with SVN much), or Subversion 1.6 having issues with Eclipse or the repo because it's going through a newer version of Eclipse than it's meant for, but I'll take your experience into consideration and maybe test a copy of the repo (though I'm not sure it's an accurate enough test unless I set up a separate trunk that it would come from since the actual repo is tied to a trunk in another location).
