This is definitely an issue for those who want to work with lots of the
tools at the same time.

Perhaps this could be spun off as a project... producing consistent sets
of plug-ins that are known to work together rather than depending on the
manual approach or hours mucking around with the update manager.

And that 's why other concurrent tools as JDeveloper or the very expensive
"JBuilder" are quite interresting for beginners !

No mess at installation process !!!

Think of it, really.
Eclipse is a really really good product.
But it 's also an awfull product when you want to install or update it,
because of all those plugins versions that do not work properly together !

FYI - the download page of WTP and most other plug-ins list the specific
required versions of Eclipse and other plug-ins compatible with the
version you're downloading. For instance, WTP 1.5M4
( http://download.eclipse.org/webtools/downloads/drops/S-1.5M4 -200601131852/)
lists:
Eclipse 3.2M4
emf-sdo-xsd 2.2.0M4
GEF 3.2M4
JEM 1.2M1

If you're using the Update Manager, and the project is correctly
configured, the Select Required button should help resolve dependencies

Hope this helps,
- Jeff

Also, the WTP UM site gives additional help:

FYI, I'm at more than 200MB of download now and I still do not have a
working version...
So 300 MB in a one big file download would have been less "bandwith
consuming".

But before anything, less "time consuming" !!!

What are you looking for? Please define what a "Working version" is to
you, maybe we can help.

I 'm looking for an "up to date", "stable build" (it is the ones
recommended on the "build_types.html" page) with WTP plugin included (not
WTP 1.0 because it as slow response times that have been corrected in WTP
build 200601042214 (as I heard).

So, I tried the last stable builds of the 2 :
- "Platform 3.2M4" found here :
http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/downloads/drops/S-3.2M4- 200512151506/index.php
- "WTP 1.5M4 + dependencies" found here :
http://download.eclipse.org/webtools/downloads/drops/S-1.5M4 -200601131852/

But, when I tried the whole thing, it did not work (could not open an old
"dynamic web project" created with 3.2M4 + WTP1.0) and I noticed many
exclamation marks in "Help -> Manage Configuration", which is obviously
the cause of the problems...

So, if you find the download links, I am very interested, yes !
(Platform >= 3.2 and WTP >= 200601042214).

Thanks,
dJu.

dJu,

I'd suggest the eclipse.webtools newsgroup for these WTP specific issues ... some users there can likely relate their experiences with various builds, etc. better than this "high level" newsgroup ... if you'd find that helpful. Also, be aware that any of the 3.2 based milestone builds will potentially be more unstable than any released build. If you were relatively happy with the 3.1 based WTP 1.0, except for performance, I'd recommend you try one of the 1.0 maintance builds (still 3.1 based). To do that,

Pick from the "M-builds" on
http://download.eclipse.org/webtools/downloads/
such as the latest one is
http://download.eclipse.org/webtools/downloads/drops/M-M2006 02141429-200602141429/

It does require a 3.1 base (and related pre-reqs) instead of 3.2, but if you do not really need 3.2, you'd likely be happier with it.

We (WTP) will be releasing a WTP 1.0.1 (maintenance) Release before too long (in about a week) based on the latest of those maintenance builds. In fact, (as one of the WTP committers, tech leads, and PMC Members) I'd be *very* interested to hear if you still find the latest maintenance build unsatisfactory! If you do, it would greatly help our open source community for you to open a bug, detailing your "use cases" that causes you problems, perhaps giving some samples, type of machine and server, and/or details on number of files, type of files, steps to reproduce the problem, etc.

I'm also guessing our build_types.html file has thrown you off, since 'maintenance builds' is listed way down the page.
Maintenance builds should be listed right after 'released builds' in terms of stability (even before 'stable builds' ... who came up with these terms? :) , and I've opened the following bug, so we can remember to fix that web page.

David, thanks a lot for this post !

Indeed, no problem with the "M200602141429" build !

Performances are good, everything runs fine and I have only one little
exclamation mark in "Help -> Manage Configuration" but with no
consequences...

And Yes, good idea to open a change request concerning the
"build_types.html" page...

So, thanks again,
dJu.

PS : I had switch to 3.2 because of a lowercase - uppercase problem
concerning "WEB-INF" directory when exporting a dynamic web project to a
WAR file but, even if "winzip" still displays it in mixed case, it seems
that, with the "M200602141429" build, there is no problem at
"decompression" (manually or by tomcat), even on a Linux machine.

Good point. I thought that would simply be a coordinated release in the
same fashion of existing releases.

Does it include an "all in one" download option?
