Hello,

why is the eclipse-project using newsgroups and no "usual" web-forums?
To me it seems to be a technique of the last century, maybe older:-)

Old messages will be automatically deleted on the server (and from time to
time in my newsreader too) and there is no easy possibility to search for
old threads. I cannot even search in the archived threads on the
eclipse-website.

This is bad, bad, bad. Or not?

regards
ronny

Who says old is bad? You don't mind using TCP/IP as well, do you?
Personally I have yet to see a good web forum with threaded view that
doesn't roundtrip to the server for opening/collapsing threads.

The messages simply aren't deleted, as per configuration of the server I
guess. If there is a problem with searching through the web-frontend,
please tell the webmaster.

Some groups are mirrored in a more fancy web-frontend at

You can also search the newsgroups and mailing lists via Google. Just
specify site:dev.eclipse.org when performing your search.

you can. just use the "search"-entry in the menu left.
it does not mean, that it is a very convenient search-interface -- a
really useful interface for the newsarchives would be highly appreciated.
i don't understand why eclipse.org does not provide a convenient interface
to search the news-archives (_without_ need to authenticate just to read
some of the searchresults) ...

The archive search function worked for me (mostly) after I always
narrowed it to newsgroups ... not the mailing lists.

Still, as another poster pointed out you can use google, just remember
to add "site:dev.eclipse.org" ... sometimes I find it helps to add
"news.eclipse" if you really are searching for a newsgroup entry.

Later,
PW

The most popular newsgroups are available in a modern web-based forum over at EclipseZone. For example,

http://www.eclipsezone.com/java/forums/t44616.html

or direct link to a particular message in the thread:

http://www.eclipsezone.com/java/forums/m91919891.html#919198 91

It's up to date and nothing gets deleted. It remembers what you read, allows posts and replies, supports multiple threading views, provides searching, hides email addresses, stores your profile, doesn't require a password, and keeps track of the most popular threads and posters. For more info on EclipseZone newsgroup mirroring or to provide feedback see:

I'm using Knode of the current KDE 3.4.2 but you are probably right.
