Eclipse SQL Explorer vs. Data Tools Platform [message #28426] |

Today I happened to notice the popular plugin Eclipse SQL Explorer.
It appears to have many of the same capabilities as this project.
My boss had heard that some SQL plugin was going to be merged into the Data
Tools Platform - perhaps he was referring to the rdb plugin from the Web
Tools Project instead?
Can anyone speak to the similarities or differences between the two
projects - or why there are two projects instead of one? I have asked them
this same question.
Ultimately, I must select one plugin to extend. I am trying to develop a
plugin to select database meta data (tables, views, columns, and stored
procedures) and export it in some form.
Thanks,
Chuck

Chuck,
Currently there are no plans to merge SQL Explorer and DTP, so your boss
must have been thinking of the recent (Europa) move to DTP by WTP, and the
dropping of their "rdb" components (in their 2.0 stream) as a result.
I think its best to let the SQL Explorer team speak to questions about the
aims and plans for their project: I'll speak for DTP here. DTP, as a
top-level Eclipse project, concentrates on delivering a data tooling
platform tightly integrated with Eclipse on a number of levels (including
the coordinated release train -- this year called "Europa"). We provide a
set of extensible frameworks and exemplary tools in this functional area.
Ultimately, we hope to provide the platform on which extenders (such as
yourself) can build out specialized data tools, and end users can benefit
from open source tooling. As DTP has matured, we are finding support for
specific databases in open source (DTP Enablement project, for example)
and in company products (Sybase, Ingres for example). We intend to
continue to work with the community at large to broaden and deepen these
extensions.
