Now that Eclipse has matured so much, do any developers actually use
Netbeans? Or is it just for gimps?

A lot of people use it. I personally don't care for it. Still too slow and
bulky for my tastes, but definitely a lot of users. I am guessing their
Studio Creator product is built up from netbeans..not sure though.

You can see for yourself at http://www.netbeans.org/about/stats/index.html
that NetBeans was downloaded some 700,000 times in 2004. Not bad.

Download statistics for Eclipse is 30,000,000 for 2004 (that is 30 million).
That is more than 40X.

Interesting figures. ;-)

I took a look at some of the screenshots of the products built on Netbeans.
They sure have been hit with the ugly stick.

I think that the aggressive release policy and the general high quality
of the milestone builds of Eclipse has a lot to say here.

The last project I worked on, several developers upgraded at every
milestone, and a few used the integration builds (the green and red
indicators of the quality are quite reliable). That gives quite a lot
of traffic.

I don't think Netbeans have managed to get the same confidence from the
community.

Additionally, I considered using Netbeans for JSP debugging, but the
MyEclipse plugin gives what we need.

Netbeans does have a very useful and fast developing free profiler based
on the JFluid project. I now use this in preference to the paid up
JProbe license we have at work. I tried the Hyades profiler for Eclipse
which also has a very good profiler engine but practically useless
analysis tools.
