Update from 4.4.0 to 4.4.1 fails (32-bit Ubuntu 14) [message #1517832]

With Luna 4.4.0 running, I select the Help:Check for Updates option and am shown a list of updates, which are all checked except the one for Luna 4.4.1.

I hit "Select All" and try to update. It fails with this message:

An error occurred while uninstalling
session context was:(profile=epp.package.standard, phase=org.eclipse.equinox.internal.p2.engine.phases.Uninstall, operand=[R]org.eclipse.platform_root 4.4.0.v20140606-1558 --> null, action=org.eclipse.equinox.internal.p2.touchpoint.natives.actions.CleanupzipAction).
Backup of file /opt/eclipse-luna/notice.html failed.
File that was copied to backup could not be deleted: /opt/eclipse-luna/notice.html

I tried again, leaving the 4.4.1 update unchecked, and all went well. So I tried again, and this time 4.4.1 was the only displayed update, and it failed again with the same problem.

The offending file "/opt/eclipse-luna/notice.html" appears to be an XML file containing the Eclipse user agreement.

I tried renaming the offending file (with sudo and adding a ".bak" extension). When I again try checking for updates, the 4.4.1 update package is the only one shown, but it includes the notice at the bottom of the Available Updates window: "Insufficient access privileges to apply this update."

I have never tinkered with any access privileges in Eclipse. I have the most "plain vanilla" installation of Ubuntu 14 imaginable. Surely I'm not the only person to run into this?

If you have done the original Eclipse install from Ubuntu repository (instead of the preferred method from the Eclipse website), your installation needs root privileges to update.

In KDE Ubuntu, the method is to pick the 'Run Command' from the K box, and write
kdesudo eclipse into the dialog box. There should be a similar method in the default Ubuntu desktop. You can also always resort to console and sudo eclipse, but this has the drawback that you may have problems with X display access.

There are two Ubuntu releases with number 14: 14.04 and 14.10. For more questions, please indicate which.

Thanks. It's Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (32-bit)

I may have installed Eclipse originally using the Ubuntu package manager (I frankly forget), but more recent versions have been downloaded from the Eclipse site.

In struggling with this a while back, I installed a program called "gksudo". Is this what I need to use to run Eclipse for the update? I couldn't seem to make it work before.

Whoa, OK, this time it worked! The secret sauce:
In Terminal, run gksudo
Tell it to run /opt/eclipse-luna/eclipse [or whatever] as root
Run the update.

Don't know why it didn't work before. Thanks for help. I will say that the Eclipse documentation could be a bit more informative about this. I've never had any problems of this sort with the Mac version of Eclipse.

It is not Eclipse's fault, but built-in into the Ubuntu package. This is one of the reasons why an initial install directly from the Eclipse site is recommended.
