'Find' feature in Eclipse is poorly implemented [message #265372] Fri, 10 October 2008 10:47 Go to next message

The Find feature in Eclipse is a pain to use. Every time I type Control-F,
it 'forgets' the previous thing I searched for and I have to type it again
(or reach for the mouse to pick it from the history pulldown). Sometimes,
when I bring up the Find dialog, the text field doesn't have focus and I
have to tab/mouse to it. And when it finds the text I'm looking for, the
Find dialog keeps focus and I have to dismiss it to get back to the
document I'm editing.

Maybe I'm just too used to standard Windows and Mac programs and the way
they do search, but the Find feature in Eclipse is nonstandard and just
frustrating to use, and gets in my way more often than not. Today it drove
me crazy enough to post about it.

Are there any plans to improve the Find feature, or is there some way to
replace it with a plugin or something?

What editor? For me (Text and Java editor) it keeps the previous search
string unless I have I selection in the editor while pressing Ctrl+F.

You could use Ctrl+J to quickly find something (but you have to type the
search string).

Normally, it will have the presently selected text as a search term,
which I find very useful, especially if you want to replace stuff.

Simply hit Arrow Down.

That seems like a bug. bugs.eclipse.org/bugs is the place to be.

I suppose that’s a feature: what if you wanted to keep searching? Yes,
there are other solutions to this, you might argue they are better.

Maybe if you file a bug at the address above and get enough people to
vote for it. I don’t know about plugins replacing the find behavior.
