I would propose to change the order of selection in the oomph dialog from

1. product
2. project

to vice-versa. Why? Well, I want to focus on project specific work, and by swapping the selection one could also set a preferred product for the project. E.g. when starting EMF project development I am not really sure which product to select! I would really prefer to just select the project, and then get a filtered view of products which it is applicable for, and one that is recommended.

Wouldn't this also ease the p2 requirements? If I e.g. recommend Eclipse for RCP and RAP I know, that there is already a set of features installed critical for me, and I dont' have to take additional care of manually adding them to the resp. setup file!

Thanks Smile

This goes against the design grain. One should generally be able to
expect that a project can work in any product, after all a product is
just the base platform with a bunch of features and even if there are
100 additional features, that shouldn't matter. The only interaction is
which versions of which tools are needed to work with the project and
can those be installed in the chosen product.

It doesn't matter.

It's not that simple unfortunately....

But that's exactly something we want to avoid so that its possible to
work with many projects in one IDE. Each project must specify what it
needs to have installed so that a proper installation can be composed
from the sum total of all these requirements....

One more comment:

Imagine (as shortly outlined in another post) I want to provide possible developers with a single-shot-setup IDE solution for whatever hip new github project i make. - I even want to spare them to select "Eclipse for whatever" and the project selection. Just opening Oomph, linking my *.setup file from https://raw.githubusercontent.com/elexis/elexis-3-core/master/ch.elexis.sdk/Elexis.setup (or whatever) and they're ready to go.

I'd certainly like this ... Smile

Given what people have to do normally (spend hours) verses having to
make (more) one choice that you'd consider ideal, the incremental
improvement is small, and given that this is effectively a complete
redesign of the workflows, documentation, and underlying logic, it's not
so compelling.

Ok, so I probably do not see how much work this would make. In my thought one could add like Advisor Elements in the .setup model which could be taken into account for offering product, project and stream pre-(or recommended-)selections. And each project using this would spare to document on what product, project and stream to select.

But thanks for your help, did not mean to ride about.
