Integrating and Extending BIRT was written by Tom Bondur, Jane Tatchell,
Iana Chatalbasheva, Tigger Newman, and me (Don French). Jason Weathersby
did not write any part of that book. He was a minor resource that the
rest of us used from time to time, but he wrote not one word. In fairness
to Jason, he was shocked and appalled when the book appeared for the first
time at EclipseCon in 2006. That was when Jason found out that he had not
only been made an author, but had been given top billing. Jason is a good
guy and had no part in this fraud and he was mortified and apologized
profusely to all of the true authors.
The Actuate BIRT management team wanted Jason listed as an author to boost
his credibility as the BIRT evangelist. However, the person ultimately
responsible for allowing this to happen was Nola Hague, the Actuate VP for
Developer Communications. She managed the entire book project, and was the
Actuate liaison with Addison Weseley. Every aspect of the book was under
her control. It was reprehensible that she let this happen. And what is
worse, she never consulted with any of the real authors before it happened
and never said a word to us about it after the fact.
Finally, Tigger Newman was not mentioned at all, either on the cover or
inside, even though she was a contributor to the book, albeit a minor one.
But at least she did some of the writing.
Shame on everyone responsible for this.
