Getting DTP installed and up and running [message #22046] Wed, 11 October 2006 15:09 Go to next message

Hello folks

I am intrigued by DTP and would like to take it for a test drive. I need
some help getting it up and running:

I am running
o Mac OS X 10.4.8
o java version "1.5.0_06"
o Eclipse 3.2.1 build M20060921-0945

This provides the recommended base for the latest stable build of DTP (1.0
M2). This all works fine

I then proceeded to download DTP 1.0 M2 SDK (including source and
JavaDocs). I notice it requires EMF 2.2.1 and GEF 3.2.1.

Using the Eclipse install manager, I install EMF and GEF (the recommended
versions). Eclipse->Help->About->Features validates these components are
correctly installed.

Here is where I falter. I download DTP 1.0 M2 SDK. This de-compresses to
an Eclipse directory. Lacking a sufficient readme type of document, I
assume I copy the plugins and features folders into my Eclipse
installation. I also follow the instructions to install the LPG run-time.

Is this the best way to install DTP 1.0 M2?

The "Getting Started" guide
(http://wiki.eclipse.org/index.php/Getting_Started_with_DTP), which I
would like to follow misses some details regarding installation.

Following the steps in the guide, I cannot see the "Database Development"
perspective as an option which leads me to believe I have failed to
install properly all the bits an pieces.

Where am I going wrong?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ahead of time

Jason

Hi Jason:

Let's see if we can figure out what is going on here. The way that you
installed seems fine, though it is just easier to extract the dtp download
zip over your eclipse install, which will then copy the feature and plugin
files to the right location. To verify, you can check your
eclipse\features folder to see if there are a number of
org.eclipse.datatools.... feature definitions, and also the
eclipse\plugins folder for a number of items (low 70s if you installed
dtp-sdk) starting with org.eclipse.datatools....

If this looks fine, the next thing I'd check is in Eclipse. Go to
Help-->Software Updates-->Manage Configuration. In the lefthand tree you
should see a node with the path to your eclipse install. Expand that node,
and you should see one node for each feature (EMF, GEF, and DTP). Expand
the DTP feature node and all child nodes (there should be 2 levels at
most) and make sure that none have a red "X" over the icon.

If these are found and do not have a red "X", then DTP should have been
installed correctly. Next, try Window-->Open Perspective-->Other and look
in the list for "Database Development."

If you've made it to the end and do not see the "Database Development"
perspective listed, then please take a look in the .metadata folder for
your eclipse workspace and open the .log file. Please let us know if there
is any content in this file, so we can look into it further.
