"J2EE Standard Tools" subproject scope: a server? [message #21951] Mon, 10 May 2004 15:39 Go to next message

While reading the page at:

http://www.eclipse.org/proposals/eclipse-webtools/index.html

I ran across this phrase, under Subprojects/J2EE Standard Tools, second
paragraph, first sentence:

Within scope will be a workbench providing a framework for
developing, deploying, testing and debugging J2EE applications
on standards-compliant server environments, as well as an
-------------
exemplary implementation for an open source J2EE Server.
--------------------------------------------------------

That last bit, that I 'underlined', is that right? Eclipse is going to
produce an open source J2EE Server? The market there is kinda crowded
right now, what with JBoss, JOnAS, and Geronimo ...

Hi Patrick,

This sentence is very confusing and needs to be reworded. The intent is not
to deliver any run-time.
This market is overcrowded and this would even overlap with what we already
do on ObjectWeb.org.

The meaning of the sentence is that we would deliver an exemplary
implementation to plug at least one
open source server. I actually beleive that to be fair, we should ship a
generic server extension that
can work on most of the J2EE servers assuming that a configuration file is
available (those could be
provided by J2EE server vendors if needed).

Thanks,
Christophe
