The ability to minimize views (esp. horizontal ones) is IMO very handy
to get a large editor area.
Proiblem is, I only can od that with teh b**dy mouse. I don't want to
move my hands off the keyboard but I could not find/assign a shortcut.

is there a way (short of writing a plugin) ?

There is currently no way to do this, but I've filed bug 60645 for this.
