Why is this group password protected? [message #220422] Mon, 31 July 2006 09:31 Go to next message

I would like to ask why this group is protected by username and password.
Is it strictly to reduce the amount of spam that is posted, and/or to
defend email addresses?

The reason I'm asking is that these groups have a WEALTH of vital
information for people working on plugins, and I have found the
NewsPortal's search interface to yield only mediocre results at best.
Opening the newsgroup up would allow the major search engines to index it,
and better searching (better results) could be a tremendous benefit to the
community.

Is there a way to address the drawbacks of an open newsgroup?
Alternately, could the web version (NewsPortal) of the newsgroup be opened
for read only without a password? The web version obscures email address
very nicely. Please consider it, thanks.

Pardon my ignorance and thanks for the replies. I didn't know the group
was already being indexed.
