classpath and write some application whose "main()" will launch the example

Do you have a specific interest are just worrying in general? ;-} Your
question deals with at least three different scenarios. Briefly, 1) you can
write an SWT-based app with nothing else from Eclipse. 2) If you use a
plugin, you are implicitly using the part of Eclipse that loads plugins,
interprets their plugin.xml, etc. Beyond that, you require from Eclipse
whatever the plugins you use require. 3) Randy Hudson once said he had no
interest in supporting GEF apart from Eclipse.
