Is there anything one could mess up that makes file search stop working?
When I do a file search on file "*", or "*.*" for that matter, it returns
nothing.
My scope is set to workspace and Shift+Ctrl+R gives me all my project
files when searching with "*".

I'll answer myself. By changing from GNU Java to Sun's the search works
again...

I'm using Sun Java and while I can use Search and File Search, I get
nothing (not even a "no results found" message) when I use the C++ search
or right-click and choose "Find References", regardless of what I search
for. It just says "Find references to X in workspace" in the search
results window and nothing else. Oddly, "Go to Declaration" works though.
Note: I'm testing this all with a hello-world type project that has no
include files.

Do you have the Indexer enabled for the project? I don't use CDT
myself, but I vaguely remember watching a screencast of it that mentioned
needing the Indexer to be running before all the searching would get
results.
Ah-hah - here it is: http://www.eclipse.org/cdt/movies/Firefox/Firefox.html
Hope this helps,
Eric
