I am confused [message #209928] Wed, 09 May 2007 17:21 Go to next message

I usually just install the Eclipse version for Java development. Since I
also need to do something else, I am confused on which one to install. On
the Eclipse home page, I can download the Eclipse project and I also can
download something from "Eclipse is used for ...". My problem is that I am
doing something crossing over different areas. For example, I would like
to have the UML2 feature as well as the Web feature. They don't appear to
be plugins, but different versions of Eclipse. Am I missing something here?

Vernon,

No, everything is installed as plugins on top of the same base Eclipse.
So you'd be able to get the downloads from WTP and UML2 and unzip them.
Most people prefer to use the update manager these days, but I haven't
used that personally...

Eclipse has a very modular architecture, with somewhat overlapping concepts
of "products", "features", "plug-ins", and "versions". But in general, a
"feature" is a collection of "plug-ins", and you can install as many
plug-ins as you want; so, for instance, you can install both the web feature
and the UML feature.

The exceptions are when a feature is not available for a particular version
of Eclipse. For instance, if feature A relies on version 3.2 of Eclipse,
but feature B relies on version 3.0 and its plug-ins are not
forward-compatible, then you can't have both features at the same time. (Of
course, you could still have two Eclipse installations, one for version 3.2
and one for version 3.0.)

You may find it helpful to use the Eclipse update manager (Help -> Software
Updates -> Find and Install...) to add new features.
