Hi,
I am trying to install Eclipse to run RCP applications on Windows Vista
(64-bit) with little success.

Is there a version which works?

So far I have tried the 3.2.2 win32 release, 3.2.1 x86-64 and 3.3M7 win32
WPF.

I have also tried running it with the Sun JDK for AMD64 and Win32.

Each time it fails to load bundles due to SWTError, although regular Java
programs run well.

Any suggestions - has anyone got a particular combination to work?

Thanks
Roger

Roger,

I think 3.3 is addressing the issue of supporting Vista, so you'd likely
have better luck with 3.3M7. I'm not sure if it supports the 64 bit
version though.

I recently got a new personal machine with Vista on it and I thought I'd
died and gone to hell. It seems so incredibly slow, even though the
machine is a super good one. Never once have I been tempted to say wow,
except of course for wow, it sure boots slow, and wow, I sure have to
reboot a lot of times to upgrade all the installed drivers, but I don't
think that's the kind of wow factor they advertise. I've not tried
Eclipse on it yet, since now the machine is failing with video memory
problems and needs servicing. Wow indeed...

Hi Ed,
Unfortunately 3.3M7 is the only one that won't even start Eclipse.

The speed of my Vista machine is good - not worthy of the hype, but what
could be?

The wow is clear. A friend's 6-year old played the same card game on the
Vista and XP machines and was talking about the superior fireworks at the
end of the game for the rest of the afternoon. You clearly need to be
running the right applications to see the benefit.

Unfortunately Eclipse isn't one of them yet. I can at least launch my RCP
if I use 3.2.2 with the x86 Sun VM, but it closes again without any error
or log message. So I will carry on experimenting with this.

I wish I understood more of what could be going wrong.
In theory, Windows apps should run in Vista 64-bit, but clearly they don't.
Eclipse itself seems fine as long as I don't run an RCP app.

Best regards
Roger

Try posting the exact error(s) you're getting. Googling for some of the
text in them might be faster than waiting for a reply here ;-)

Hi Eric,
Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately that is easier said than done.

a. Running Eclipse 3.2.2 with the x86 Sun Java VM (1.6) my RCP app starts
up and suddenly disappears. No errors, nothing untoward in the .log file.

b. Using a x64 VM with the 3.2.1 x86_64 early access version, I get errors
like:
"java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: C:\eclipse 3.2.1
x64\configuration\org.eclipse.osgi\bundles\79\1\.cp\swt-win3 2-3309.dll:
Can't load AMD 64-bit .dll on a IA 32-bit platform"

but I assume that that isn't going to lead anywhere useful so I gave up on
b.

c. With 3.3M7 Eclipse won't start at all. There are almost 1Mb of errors
in the .log file. I wouldn't know where to start.

I am concentrating on stepping through the code for case a.

Any suggestions for how to tackle this more efficiently would be welcome.
Thanks
Roger

Hi,
It looks like there was a corruption in my VM.

I reinstalled everything and now it seems to work well with Eclipse 3.2.2
for Win32 running under Sun JRE 1.6.0 Win32.

I have given up on the 64-bit Java with RCP although it works well with
simple Java apps.

Regards
Roger
