Error starting Eclipse on Debian 4 Etch [message #204946] Sun, 15 April 2007 08:04 Go to next message

Hi,

The other day I installed Eclipse (from eclipse.org, not the Debian
version), together with the newest Sun JDK 1.6. After unpacking (tar
zxf) it into /opt, chown-ing /opt/eclipse to user and creating a
launcher for the desktop, the start ends in error. I do see the
Eclipse-logo, but before the loading-bar appears, it crashes with a
message about the logfile. After starting Eclipse in terminal, the error
says that /opt/eclipse/configuration is missing, which turns out to be
correct. I downloaded eclipse again, removed /opt/eclipse, unpacked and
chown-ed again, but same happens.
Checking the installation on FC6, I find that everything is there, and I
installed that (soon after the release of 3.2.2) without a problem.

Can someone give an explanation?

Thanks,

Huub

I'm also using Eclipse on Debian Etch edition.
How about try to install eclipse from the kernel.org mirror and upgrade
your eclipse.
Wish you good luck.

I'm not sure what you mean with kernel.org mirror. In the eclipse
mirrorlist I can't find that mirror.

Hi Huub,

I have been running Eclipse on Debian Etch for years without a problem.
The one difference between our setup is that I don't install it in
/opt. I know you are chown-ing it to user, but try to unpack it
directly in your home directory. tar xvzf eclipse...tar in /home/<user>.

Then try to launch it. (cd eclipse; ./eclipse). I think the
configuration file is created on launch, so it sounds like there is a
problem creating it. If this works, then we can try and figure out why
you can't get it installed in opt. If this doesn't work, then there may
be a problem with your vm.

Let me know how it goes.

cheers,
ian

Hi Ian,

After unpacking in ~/, it started ok. Then I removed /opt/eclipse,
recreated it with mkdir, chown-ed it to user, then with mc copied the
contents of ~/eclipse to /opt/eclipse. Now it does work ok. I still find
it odd that it refused to start the original way.

Just the apt source list.
Have you ever used apt?
