M7: Ant Error [message #203649] Mon, 16 May 2005 15:47 Go to next message
Eclipse UserFriend
Just installed M7.
Now anytime I try to run a task from the ant view, I get a Virtual
Machine Launcher error msg saying: "Cannot find main class. program will
exit"

Any ideas why this would happen?

Is it only when you attempt to build from the Ant view?
Is it for all build files?
Any other indications of problems in the .log file?
How did you install M7...clean install or over a previous Eclipse install?
If you right click in the Ant view>Run As>Ant Build... to bring up the
launch configuration dialog is there indication of error in the dialog?

Installed M7 by renaming c:\program files\eclipse to c:\program
files\eclipse3.1M6 and then extracting the M7 zip to c:\program
files\eclipse (clean install)

I get the same error for ALL build files.
I get the error if I use the run task button in ant view, right clicking
and choosing run task in ant view, or from the run as... dialog.
Basically anytime ant is run.

The run as... dialog shows no configuration errors.
If I boot up the old M6 install (using same workspace) everything runs fine.

There are no errors put into the eclipse error log.

After attempting to run your Ant build, open the Debug view.
Right click on the process>Properties>Process Information.

Can you paste what it is indicated?

Here it is.
I did notice that the -Djava.library.path looks a little strange cause

Eclipse UserFriend
OK, i got the issue fixed.
Basically, eclipse is now including the env PATH var as part of the
java.library.path This is fine except that in my env PATH I had quotes
around an entry that contained spaces (namely "C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\VSS\win32"; go figure.)

eclipse didn't escape the quotes properly and that made it go boom.
I just took off the quotes in my env var and everything runs fine now.

I'm not sure if this would really be considered a bug or not seeing as
how most people would put quotes in their path var.

Thanks for the help!

Eclipse UserFriend
So it would appear that you have modified the Ant runtime classpath to point
to an external Ant home: C:\apache-ant-1.6.2?
M7 ships with Ant 1.6.3 as an Eclipse plugin.
That said things should still work...but your Ant runtime classpath will not
be automatically upgraded if you as the user have made changes.
The path element of interest is: C:\Program
Files\eclipse\configuration\org.eclipse.osgi\bundles\8\1\.cp \lib\remoteAnt.j
ar
Does this actually exist? This is the Eclipse Ant integration jar that
provides the entry point for running Ant

I will try to reproduce the problem with having the Eclipse install in a
location with spaces...possibly a bug.

Thanks for your help in tracking this down
Darins

Eclipse UserFriend
Thanks to Jonathan's help we have fixed this up.

To workaround in M7, you can turn off "Set an Input Hander" on the Main tab
of your Ant launch configuration.

I now have a quoted path on one of my machines to catch these problems in
the future :-)
