*Eclipse group* efforts, on basic infrastructure.

The best possible answer I can say right now is: stay tuned. There is
definitely lots of conversations going on about getting something like this
off the ground. Are you interested in contributing?

However, I would like to keep tabs on developments, especially to give
feedback on what a non-Java HLL programmer is looking for. Right now my
plan is to try out DrSchme because it has its own self-contained IDE.
This I think will simply be easier in the short term, as from comments
like "stay tuned" I believe that Eclipse development on Dynamic
Languages is not quite where I'd like it to be yet. From having read
all the LDT backposts, I see many personalities and approaches in play,
so I'd like to see some resolution, structure, and observable roadmaps /
timetables / plans before trying to slot myself into anything.
If I went the Eclipse route to Scheme, it would be using the Schemeway
plugin. http://schemeway.sourceforge.net/ This is the work of 1 very
productive / overworked author. It is not a much documented tool, and
it has the "author can get killed by a bus" problem. The author is big
into Kawa Scheme, which does Java compliation IIUC. I've been more
interested in Bigloo Scheme, which has C, Java, and C# backends.
Also there's a fundamental issue of build culture to resolve. A Scheme
programmer is loathe to depend directly upon Java to do builds, i.e.
Ant. I also find 'make' distasteful; Scheme is a better language, why
not base build tools on that? So possibilities I see: use the 'make'
with Scheme syntax found in DrScheme (IIUC), use Scheme to interface to
Ant XML files, or use GNU Conjure http://home.gna.org/conjure/ . I
don't have an opinion yet on which way is the least painful to go. I
only know that as long as I'm doing Scheme, I won't put up with 'make'.

That makes good sense. When I said "stay tuned" I meant I hope that we will
soon get some work started. It will be a TBD longer time before we have
something done.
