How can I copy a diagram to the system clipboard, so it can be pasted
into a word document?

I think you should catch a CTRL+C action and then "make a screenshot" of
diagram (by preparing a jpg from this - look for my answer how to capture
the diagram into jpg).
Whe You capture diagram to jpg (or any other grphic format) put this one
into system clipboard.

Should be simple....
