[ANN] move to "org.eclipse.swt" namespace and new plan [message #18821] Thu, 19 April 2007 15:13 Go to next message

We would like to announce a couple of news that are really exiting to us:

After many RAP users have requested it and after discussing this topic
with the SWT and Platform team we will be moving to the org.eclipse.swt,
org.eclipse.jface and org.eclipse.platform.ui namespaces (package names).

This has a couple of implications:
- we will provide a strict subset of the established API in those
namespaces
- we will invest more time in the 1.o timeframe to provide a
consistent and broader than originally planned SWT API
- we will move to the 3.3 code stream for JFace and Workbench
- we will adopt the next version of qooxdoo (0.7) for our 1.0 release,
and we might be able to use SVG, VML on the client side for better
usability and more advanced look and feel

This move will enable you to share code much more easily between RCP and
RAP and build more powerful RAP applications.

However, this comes at a price as we feel that we need some more time to
accomplish those tasks. We have updated our plan and added two more
milestones before 1.o. We have put the "disruptive" changes in the next
two milestones, please see the plan below:

http://wiki.eclipse.org/index.php/RapPlan

We hope that you agree with our updated plan and welcome your feedback.

Cheers,

Jochen

That sounds good,
but could it be possible to fix/add following bug and feature entries in the
next milestone:
- 180156 IWorkbenchPage.showView() is missing
- 183179 Customize RAP URL through extension
- 183181 setTile on View
- 183182 Multiple Views
- 183187 Open a Browser Window
- 183193 Combo height incorrect with GridData.FILL

These are bugs/features wich could improve my application handling a lot.

Best regards,

Markus

Rafael,

Yes, we have added 3 more month before the 1.0 release, and yes, this is
against an unwritten rule at Eclipse. However, there are some strong
reasons for this move:
- changing the API after the 1.0 release would have been worse than
delaying the release
- moving RWT to a subset of SWT requires additional work
- it has turned out that the amount of API that developers want to
(re)use is bigger than we had anticipated

We try to be responsive to the community and I am sorry that you are
disappointed.

Jochen
