Path too long to unzip [message #193691] Tue, 13 February 2007 08:20 Go to next message

I have just downloaded Eclipse but, when I unzipped the download, one file
was reported as having too long a name
(runtime_registry_compatibilitysrc). i.e. Path name is too long for my OS
(Windows Vista). I unzipped to C: so cannot make the path any shorter. Is
this file needed?

Thanks.

Hi Julian

I do not know how about Vista, but in XP files are extracted first to
TEMP folder, and then copied to correct location. And the temp folder is
located in user documents folder.

So you may change TEMP folder in system properties -> advanced ->
environment variables (but do not forget to restore it after you are
done with eclipse).

Hope it helps.

Regards,
Chris

Which version of Eclipse did you download? You should check that the
version you have is compatible with vista (the downloads page and/or
release notes will tell you), since I think 3.2.x is NOT.
In any case, try using a real unzip tool like WinZip, Power Archiver, or
7-zip instead of the zip handling that is built in to windows - it is
known to have bugs with long file paths.

Hope this helps,
Eric
