Thanks for the interest,
well, I looked into it a bit more and here I go:
the link that opens is:
http://localhost:54614/wsexplorer/wsexplorer.jsp?org.eclipse .wst.ws.explorer=0
A random port number is chosen each time.
I try to open this link in Iceweasel 2.0.0.3 (that is Firefox for
debian) and Epiphany (Gnome) browser as well.
The page seems to load but there is no "output". Just a blank screen.
However, when I try to run the examples and tutorials located here:
http://www.eclipse.org/webtools/community/communityresources .html#ws
they web services and web services client work perfectly through the
above browsers.
There is no internal browser available. That option in eclipse is "grey"
- unavailable from default.
If there is any other piece of info you would like me to post here just
let me know.

I'm not familiar with lomboz, but I am guessing that it is based on one
of the WTP 1.5.x releases. I haven't run into any problems launching
the web services explorer on any of these releases.
One log to check would be the log for the eclipse tomcat server that
serves up the web services explorer. This should be located at
your_workspace_location/.metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.tomca t/catalina.log.
If there are any server errors they should be reported in there.
I could be wrong, but I think the help pages are served from that tomcat
server too. Do the help pages come up alright for you? If they don't
that might indicate that the problem is with the server.
It also might be useful to know if this happens on your system with a
"plain" WTP install, i.e. just WTP and it's prerequisites.

You are right. Opening the Help Contents from the Help menu opens the
following url:
http://127.0.0.1:57328/help/index.jsp
which is also a blank screen!
I posted in the previous post the catalina.log from the eclipse's
internal tomcat server (org.eclipse.tomcat) and nothing seems to be
wrong there.
I haven't tried a wtp clean install yet (only with lomboz) but I guess I
will if no other solution comes up soon.
PS. I am trying the same thing on a friends laptop, with exactly the
same configuration, and the the web services explorer and help contents
show up normally...

That is the strange thing, the two laptops are quite the same.
Different brands, but they both have core 2 duo processors, debian etch
(testing) updated with the latest packets, sun-java5 (1.5.0-10-3) debian
package, manually installed eclipse and lomboz (each prerequisites on
each own) of the same version (3.2.2 and 3.2.1RC1 respectively)... I
cant think of any difference that could actually make a difference! It
crossed my mind to to a fresh install of debian and the rest, but then I
realized I was just being paranoid... There has to be another way. The
thing is, the reference laptop doesn't even have its MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME
variable set, neither appended to the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable. It makes
no sense...
I have "built" globus toolkit 4 on the current debian sun-java5 packet
so I am a bit reluctant on downgrading and manually installing an
archive java edition, but I dont know what other choices I have left...
All ideas are, as usually, welcome!
