Avast Internet Security blocks eclipse debug mode [message #1178101] Sat, 09 November 2013 06:39 Go to next message

Before installing Avast Internet Security i was able to run and debug my application in eclipse (version Juno) without problems, but after installing Avast Internet Security i can run my application but i can't debug it, in the fact when i click on F11 to launch debug i get the following error :

Launching MyApplication has encountered a problem.
Cannot connect to VM
Details:
Cannot connect to VM
com.sun.jdi.connect.TransportTimeoutException

And in console window it's displayed:
FATAL ERROR in native method: JDWP No transports initialized, jvmtiError=AGENT_ERROR_TRANSPORT_INIT(197)
ERROR: transport error 202: connect failed: Connection timed out
ERROR: JDWP Transport dt_socket failed to initialize, TRANSPORT_INIT(510)
JDWP exit error AGENT_ERROR_TRANSPORT_INIT(197): No transports initialized [../../../src/share/back/debugInit.c:690]

I suspect that Avast firewall is blocking access to debug mode of the local Virtual machine (jdk1.6.0_25) or when installing avast the setup has modified some Windows system configuration.

I am having the exact same symptom. I disabled the Avast Firewall and I was able to debug in Kepler for a few minutes. Then the error started up again and I can't debug even though the Avast firewall and file system protection are temporarily disabled. I tried restarting Eclipse but am still having the problem.

Update - my situation is slightly different. I have been using Avast Security for longer than I've been using Eclipse. I started back in January with Juno but now am using Kepler. I did not have any problem with Eclipse debugging until recently. It's hard to tell when the problem started because I have been working with Xtext and Xtend and I wasn't using the Java debugger until just a few days ago.

Also it seems there was a major upgrade to Avast in the past month so there's still a possibility there's a relationship. However all of the articles I read about the debug port in Eclipse related to remote debugging, which I am not doing. I'm just trying to debug my application on my local machine.

Looked like a similar issue here:

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7487526/unable-to-debug-in-java-with-eclipse

However I can ping 127.0.0.1 and localhost by name, so that's not the issue. I'm using Windows 7.

I also checked this, which recommends using JDK instead of JRE. Didn't make any difference.

I uninstalled AVast and now miraculously, debugging is working again! Time to find a new AV, unless they can fix this really quick.

AVG works for me.

Hmm I just tried AVG trial on my several years old Win 7 laptop, and it slows Eclipse to a crawl (apparently). I'll wait the 30 days to see if Avast gets it cleared up.

It might be worth giving Ubuntu Linux a try. Eclipse runs great on it.

I'm having the same issue on Ubuntu Linux 12.04 with no Avast AV previous installation, so eclipse-kepler is not running great on it...
