Testing tools used in eclipse build process [message #16787]

Hi all, I'm trying to get a handle on the testing procedures used by the
eclipse team (particularly the automated tests that are part of the build
process) - I heard some tidbits at eclipsecon, so I went to look and see
the nuts and bolts, but can't find one good high level view. Is there one
available?

So far I've uncovered the two test applications in the org.eclipse.tests
plugin that use command line params to derive the plugin and classname for
a junit test to run.
I've also found the org.eclipse.core.tests.harness plugin which defines a
couple more application classes and derives its test cases from an
extension point.

Is one of these mechanisms deprecated in favor of the other?
