I haven't worked with Eclipse for a while (around 2 years) but used
netBeans until now. The main reason for not using eclipse was that staying
up-to-date and conflicting versioning made life rally hard.
Needing a tool to develop a graphical editor led me to GMF which seemed
perfect. So I followed the first tutorial (
ttp://wiki.eclipse.org/GMF_Tutorial ):
I downloaded in the course of my unsuccessful attempts eclipse both javas
( eclipse-java-europa-fall2.zip and eclipse-jee-europa-fall2-win32.zip )
on a win2k3 adv. svr. 64bit and installed it (unzipped it).
There are 2 eclipse execs: eclipsec and eclipse. Since I don't need the
console (?) I started eclipse.exe and accepted the default for the
workspace.
Without ever having opened a project I immediately launched
[help][software updates][find and install]/[search for new features to
install]/[europa discovery site]
leaving "ingore features not applicable to this environment", the default,
marked.
Since I got link broken errors updating from the random mirrors I selected
the original "Europa Discovery Site" (last item on the list) as source.
There, following the advice in the tutorial, I selected
[Europa Discovery Site]+[Models and Model Development]+[Graphical Modeling
Framework (Europa Edition) 2.0.1.v20070809-0000-7X77_EIn-...]
and let the updater add all required mods clicking the [Select Required]
button which resultet in 3 or 8 selections altogether.
Added in Europa Java:
1) [Enabling Features]+[EMF org.eclipse.emf.common 2.3.0.v200709252135]
(hmm, there is a 2.3.1 of the common also which was not selected)
2) +[EMF org.eclipse.emf.ecore 2.3.1.v200709252135]
Added in Europa JEE:
1) [Enabling Features]+[EMF Model Query 1.1.0.v200706071712-10-...]
2) [Enabling Features]+[EMF Model Query OCL Integration
1.1.0v200706071712-10-...]
3) [Enabling Features]+[EMF Validation Framework 1.1.1.v200708161445-...]
4) [Enabling Features]+[EMF Model Transaction 1.1.1.v200708231948-...]
5) [Enabling Features]+[EMF Model Transaction Workbench Integration
1.1.1.v200707252036-...]
6) [Enabling Features]+[Object Constraint Language (OCL)
2.0.1.1.1.v200707131415-...]
7) [Enabling Features]+[Object Constraint Language (OCL) 2.o Compatibility
1.1.1v200709121956-...]
, ran it (accepting with "install all" the 'unsigned feature' warning) and
restarted eclipse.
Let's skip the CVS download of the 'taipan' example which worked just
dandy. I could run it also successfully.
Now it was time to start myself:
I opened the cheat sheet for the "GMF Tutorial" started it and clicked
"Click to perform" on the first step which opened the "New GMF Project"
wizard(!!!). I accepted the default for the project name
("org.eclipse.gmf.examples.mindmap") at the default location and [next]ed
I turned on the "Show Dashboard view" and pushed [Finish]
The project was created and I see the Dashboard which I detach and move it
to another screen.
The next step in the cheat sheet involves the creation of the domain model
which is where I get stuck:
The cheat sheet says:
"At this point, you can either copy the provided mindmap.ecore or
mindmap.xsd model into the 'model' folder, or use the ECore diagram to
model it from the diagram provided online.
Next, we'll create a new mindmap.genmodel and generate the model and edit
code.
The following steps are required:
1. Right-click the mindmap model file and select New... | Other... |
Eclipse Modeling Framework | EMF Model and use the defaults of the wizard
to create a new mindmap.genmodel."
There is at the moment no ecore file and selecting anywhere in the object
tree
[new][other]
opens an empty "New" window titled "Select a wizard" with one line of
content, namely "Wizards:" and nothing below down to the standard buttons
[back][next][finish] = grayed out and [cancel] which is my only option.
Downloading the mindmap from the cvs works but does not help since I
believe that it works fine once the 'wizard' can be addressed to create
own projects, but I myself don't seem to be able to even manually
duplicate the creation of a GMF project.
My guess is that some parts have not been loaded or the 'wizard' not been
bound into the context sensitive menues since the cheat sheet was very
capable to create the GMF project while I can't, missing all wizards. Are
the wizards on strike?
I am pretty desperate since gmf seems like a godsend to my needs! Well, if
I could actually get it to cooperate with me.
Is there anything else I could/should load since this newsgroup is very
active which implies that many others CAN actually work with GMF =>
succeeded in the install.
Thank you for any hints or ideas you might have to get me further
