Build controls and initial impressions of CDT [message #163996] Thu, 16 February 2006 12:06

Hi

I would like to give a few comments as a new user of Eclipse and CDT.
Perhaps these comments could influence improvements for CDT 3.1?

My impression is that it feels different to the IDEs I am used to
(Microsoft Visual Studio and ADI VisualDSP++). I do not find the interface
intuitive. A struggle for me is the build controls. In the mentioned IDEs
there are 3 buttons:

Compile (current source file only)
Build (incremental)
Build All

These are intuitive. CDT appears not to have these, and I struggle with
the concept that the whole project is rebuilt when I either save a file or
choose build from the project menu.

Another user has commented in this forum about the desirable ability to
easily switch between Release and Debug builds. I agree with that comment.
Again, that is available in other IDEs.

It would also be nice to be able to easily add an existing file to a
project.

Finally, the indexer is potentially powerful but seems buggy at present. A
useful addition would be the ability to hover over a variable to show its
type, as in Visual Studio.

I hope these comments are useful. Thanks for the efforts of the CDT
developers!

David
