I now first hand how difficult it is to set up a maintainable set of
Eclipse dependencies, but GMF is often a weak link for me (or is it
actaully EMFT?) in trying to put together a tool chain. If I use the
update manager on a completely clean version of Europa everything is
fine. But if I try to do anything with the Milestone releases I end up
with configuration errors which are not fixable.

If I try to use the update site with MDT included, I get:

Unable to retrieve remote reference
" http://mirrors.cat.pdx.edu/eclipse/modeling/gmf/update-site/ milestone/features/org.eclipse.emf.ocl_1.0.1.v200611160858.j ar".

up on update site, if I install GMF manuall, I first get the OCL and
Transaction dependencies in particular always seem to be an issue, so
perhaps that is more of the root issue. But it might be useful to take
a look at the current plugin dependencies for those and see if they
can't be relaxed. When I select MDT OCL 1.1.1 and EMF transaction
1.1.1 from the MDT update site I get :

Current configuration contains errors that are not corrected by the
requested operation and more errors would be introduced. See details
for more information.
----- Current configuration problems -----
Graphical Modeling Framework Runtime
(1.0.100.v20071003-0000-7d3ES9EYjiMWQjxOwf56Rksppm43) requires feature
"org.eclipse.emf.transaction (1.0.0)", or compatible.
Graphical Modeling Framework SDK
(2.0.1.v20071003-0000-7f79EAVEMnXCyCPoy-05z-EGkTWo) requires feature
"org.eclipse.ocl (1.1.0)", or compatible.
----- Configuration problems after the operation -----
OCL 2.0 Binding for UML (1.1.1.v200707131415-1007w311818242526)
requires plug-in "org.eclipse.uml2.uml (2.1.0)", or equivalent.
EMF Model Transaction Workbench Integration Examples
(1.0.100.v200706071723-3-Ag9oA55P5M5P8PAD) requires plug-in
"org.eclipse.emf.examples.library.edit (2.2.0)", or compatible.

wha?! :(

Currently the consolidated requirements build page for dependencies
gives a 404, as does every other link.

BTW,

backing up to Ecipse 2.0.1 instead gets me to a page that directs me to
an Orbit release with again..dead link.

I hate to be blunt, but is 2.x as a non pre-built release really
expected to be installed by average developers at this point? The
problem is that I have other dependencies so even though I am not
currently using GMF I have to ask any developer users of my tools to
install GMF. At this point I can't offer them any reasonable options or
step by step directions except to use a pre-built release and that
locks everyone into Platform 3.3..

I think I've solved the issue more or less and I'll take my share of
the blame for any confusion, but I'd like to suggest that the update
site location be more prominent for GMF. Yes, I could have inferred it,
but the web page with the site location is really burried compared to
some other projects.

More importantly searching some other groups I found the following
site, which also isn't well advertised. It is the prototype ganymede
site and includes builds for all of the potential dependencies. Yeah!
