I need to get off the ground with Eclipse. I am just beginning a project
to develop a front-end in Eclipse for the programming language ML. As a
first step, I would be happy to build an editor that colors keywords and

The Eclipse API is large and I'm having a hard time getting a foothold
anywhere -- in other words, I'm not sure where to start hacking. Does
anyone have any words of wisdom as to how to get started? Is there an
especially good tutorial or sample project for getting up to speed?

Have you looked at the sample project templates provided by the New
Plug-in Project wizard? One of the samples is a basic xml editor with
syntax highlighting, etc. You can use that code as a starting point for
your editor.
