an update from within wtp-all-in-one-sdk-1.0-linux-gtk, which is
eclipse 3.1.1 platform does not include an update to eclipse 3.1.2

Is this behaviour intended?

This should work, but it is a funtion of the base Eclipse itself, not WTP.
And, its a little different than the process of updating WTP.

If you already have 3.1.1 installed (via the all in one zip), you should be able to use simply the
Update Manager choice of "check for updates of existing features". And ... that should find updates
for 3.1.2 Eclipse, and EMF update. It would not find any for GEF or JEM as those did not change.
It also would not find for WTP 1.0.1, for different reasons. I will be publishing directions for that soon.

If you find it does not work, you might help contribute by doing some "pure" tests (a fresh 3.1.1
install first) then try the "check for updates to existing features". If that does not work, its bug-worthy.

I now installed a fresh pure (SDK-3.1.1-linux-gtk.tar.gz) eclipse.
A search for updates to existing feature(s) said: "No update for the
currenty installed feature(s) try again later"

I am using Suse9.2, jdk1.5

Well, I haven't tried it myself, but I THINK that would be a
bug against the platform update component ... I'b be interested in
what they say!

Some coments in
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=123162
already describe the problem.

http://www.eclipse.org/eclipse/platform-releng/updatesfor3.1 .1.html

provides an alternate update procedure which actually solved the problem.
