Ok, I have finally gotten to the point of getting irritated. I have an
Eclipse 3.1 version running with WTP. I did this last year, and to be
perfectly honest, I don't know how I did it. I tried to install the
plugin, but no matter what I did, none of the features would work. Then
I read in a post that using an update site would work, so I tried that.
That seemed to work. I tried to do it a second time, and I was unable
to! >8|
It appears that the update site that I was using no longer exists, and
the new version is completely different and does not work! I do not know
how many times I have read posts where people have stated that they
installed a plugin, but it doesn't work, and they cannot figure out why.
This is NOT RIGHT. If all the dependencies for a plugin are not met,
then something needs to happen! I truly love the Eclipse product, but
this one thing is so frustrating, it makes me a little crazy.
We need to be able to reliably install plugins, and have a repeatable
method for finding out why a plugin doesn't work. IMHO, being forced to
go to an update site just to get something to work because the download
package is errored or incomplete is CRAP! Downloads need to be correct,
if they are not they need to be fixed! If a plugin doesn't work, what is
the best method to go about figuring out why?
So just when I thought things were getting better... I downloaded the
new all-in-one version. It installed fine. Only problem is that IT
DOESN"T WORK! No matter what I did, none of the projects that I spent
all taht time on in the previous version would work after they were
imported.

Perhaps you could look in the .log file and see if there are any errors
reported there. And, if so, share them with others to help you solve
the problem. I've installed on several machines with different JDK's
and everything worked fine.

You should give details on versions of all the software you're using
from the OS to the JDK.

I have tried this on both Windows 2000 (all service packs) and XP (home
version, no service packs). I installed JDK 1.4.2_08 in both machines.
In both cases I did not find any errors in the log. I have finally come
to the conclusion that the standard process of installing the plugins by
extracting them into the eclipse folder and restarting eclipse is just
not suitable for installing WTP (and all the related stuff like EMF,
GEF, etc.). There is one or more things that are happening when the
install is done using the update manager that are not being done the
other way.
I did try a new thing which did work, although I am not sure why. I
found some text in the eclipse book that I bought about creating a local
update site for the update manager. I extracted all of the packages into
this local site and ran the update manager aginst it. The odd thing is
that once I did that, it found the correct update sites on the network
and installed everything correctly, even though I did not enter the
information for those update sites. Now that install is working. Very
strange.

Is it possible the problem is related to this one I found in 1.5m4,
where there is some punctuation problem in the package naming (note the
"-0015" vs "_0015")?

Plug-in: "org.eclipse.jst.jsp.core" version: "1.0.100.v20060111-0015"
referenced by this feature is not included at runtime. Runtime includes
plug-in version "1.0.100.v20060111_0015" supplied by feature
"org.eclipse.jst.web_core.feature" version "1.0.0".

I'm stuck in the same kind of problem with "_" instead of "-"... See
below what I found in the status of warned component. Any advice is
welcomed !

Plug-in: "org.eclipse.jdt.core" version: "3.2.0.v-631" referenced by
this feature is not included at runtime. Runtime includes plug-in
version "3.2.0.v_631" supplied by feature "Eclipse Java Development
Tools" version "3.2.0.v20051212-0800-05frhQbfqg".

I ended up just downloading this :
http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/webtools /downloads/drops/R-1.0-200512210855/wtp-all-in-one-sdk-1.0-w in32.zip

which has everything you need for WTP.

Thanks,

R

Unfortunately, I did try that. That is one of the reasons I got
irritated. The install was painless, but alas, it is buggy. Here is an
excerpt from a post on Jan 15 on the WTP 1.0 maintenance release:
"WTP 1.0 is unusable without patches
(saving takes 5-10 seconds, look at all those bug-reports and forum
posts about that issue), and delaying a usable release until
mid-february forces everyone to either drop WTP or install a nightly
build."
Oh well, at least I figured out a way to get the older version installed
and working.

Yeah, I'm still running Eclipse 3.0 and WTP 0.7 until they get the
3.2/1.5 installation working.
