Hi,

We are developing a plug-in that requires GEF. It's an academic project
dedicated for biologists.

The easiest and most natural solution to install GEF seems to be the
update site. Unfortunately it is so slow!

Is there any plan to improve this? Could we provide our own update site
mirror for our 'partners'?

Chris.

Yes, you could. The update site just uses simple HTTP protocol and requires
a few index files to be in place along with the downloadable jars. I'm not
an expert on it but it should be described in Eclipse's build-in help system

Technically I know I could, but I'm not sure it's a good idea to make
it on my own.

There are a lot of mirrors for the main eclipse download site. But the
update site is already over loaded. The same for GEF I think. Maybe the
eclipse team should propose also mirroring of the update site in their
standard proposals.

Mirrors should be supported by the Eclipse site itself and the update
mechanism (maybe allow the user to choose source). It's a great idea,
please open bugzillas (agains the platform RelEng component perhaps) or
contact the site admin.
