I downloaded the simple gef editor and unpacked it into eclipse/plugins.
However if I add a new file to any of my projects and name it
something.smeg, eclipse just opens it into a texteditor.
help->about->plugin-details doesn't show any plugins except all that are
from Eclipse.org. However if I try to import for example existing plugin
,then it shows on that list.
So is there something else to be done or am I just stupid?

after unzipping any new plugins into the plugins directory, start
eclipse with the clean flag so that it will look for new plugins.
eclipse -clean
