I have been given the task of refactoring an existing java program using
several different design patterns. I'm relatively new to java and
eclipse. I was wondering if there were any tools or tutorials that would
be of some help in getting started. Some of the main refactoring
objectives include generalizing classes and creating a GUI for the
program. Thanks a lot.

On the Java side, go to java.sun.com and work through their tutorial.

On the Eclipse side, go to Help => Help Contents => Workbench User Guide
& Java Development User Guide => Getting Started.
