hi!

I'm really surprised because I can't find a stable version of Eclipse, only development ones. I was using some version from 2007 (which is super-stable) for very long time and after these years I decided to upgrade to something new on my brand new laptop with Linux.

I downloaded of course some packages from download site but - unfortunately - these seem to be some development and not stable versions, with many bugs and practically not usable. I tried this several times for last few weeks and checked updates, but again there's no stable version available. I finally just copied my old version from 2007 which is something that I can use.

I checked at least 3 or 4 versions before writing this topic. f.e. this Juno strange thing is not allowing me to move toolbars and (sic!) the toolbar to change perspective is much bigger in height than it should be (maybe you don't take account to these ~10-15 pixels more but I DO!); one version I tried some weeks ago was not compiling the C++ source code at all with some strange bug that gcc is not installed. And here comes my assumption that these are not tested and development versions and I probably downloaded not what I wanted... Thus, where I can find a stable version of Eclipse?

Strange, I thought that after these ~6 years Eclipse developers managed to have something that we can call stable, right? That's my question: what version should I download to have a real-stable environment for my Java/C++ programming needs (for at least next few years)? I'm not a big fan of reinstalling/updating and if I put something on my development environment it normally stays as-is for years.

Finally, I'm still bound to that version from year 2007 and I'm quite happy with it, but come on: I believe that Eclipse development was not stalled for these 6 years and at least one version I can download that is properly tested, QA'ed and marked as stable.

Thanks in advance, hope you understand my astonishment.

Nope, I don't understand your astonishment at all. I've used Eclipse
since before Europa and, with the possible exception of Ganymede which I
didn't like so much, have found them all stable (Europa, Galileo,
Helios, Indigo and Juno) and I've used them on Windows XP, Windows 7,
openSuSE 10.x, Ubuntu Karmic, Lucid and Precise.

I don't particularly like Juno myself, but I've experienced no trouble
with it, I just don't like the interface changes, some of which can be
easily remedied.

If your orientation is C/C++, you should be using the Eclipse CDT forum
where you might find more understanding and knowing ears.

Thanks for prompt reply. Shall I make a video of errors I encountered? In the version I have now after correct compile (no errors from gcc in the console view) Eclipse in Problems page is showing me 100+ errors for unknown reason and my files are awfully red. Why is that I don't bother, other version I tried was telling me that gcc is not installed. The other can compile correctly but I can't move toolbars, etc, etc. Endlessly.

I'm just looking for something stable that I will not have to spend hours figuring out what's going on. Simple "works for me" is not an answer, I do believe that it could work on some other machine. So what, it's not working on mine, and...? I'm developer myself and I do understand that there are many dependencies. I have a standard Linux Fedora box, nothing fancy... I'm just wondering if it's possible to make a stable version of Eclipse (stable I mean that we have a "stable" branch in repo that was polished for some months, tested on endless amount of configurations and no new features added).

Thanks, maybe I'm too affected and should stick to something that is working for me (e.g. that version from 2007), considering that Eclipse is free why I should demand proper QA/testing etc.

A video sounds like a good idea if it's really that complicated.
However, as it sounds very C/C++ related, I urge you to take it up with
the Eclipse CDT crowd instead of the newcomers' forum.

Until about 5 years ago, I did C and assembly (for 25+ years before
that) and I used gcc/automake/etc. and not Eclipse. I started using
Eclipse a couple of years before quitting C while I was learning Java.
However, if I were going to do C today in any serious way, I would at
least try Eclipse. (Especially if I were stuck using Windoz--I'm a
Unix/Linux guy). I do back-end Java/JEE work now and can't imagine using
anything else.

Go over to the Eclipse CDT forum and start talking there, I'm sure
they'll help you out.
