Should use graphical editor with Pallette or Without [message #141087] Thu, 01 July 2004 17:45 Go to next message

I am developing a "draw pad" application with the GEF - so that basically it
will be something very similar to Microsoft Powerpoint in drawing the
shapes.

My question is, should I my graphical editor have a palette or not?

I guess it boils down to a few questions:
1) can I get the same effect using ActionSets and just a toolbar instead of
a palette?
2) what advantages/disadvantages are there to using a palette graphical
editor (or without a palette)?

Regards,

Spack

Why do you not want to use a palette? Key bindings?

You probably should use one. It's the standard way and allows the user to
customize the look, size, location, etc. of the tools. What happens when
there are lots of items in the palette? Having them all on a menu or a
toolbar is not appropriate.

At this point its more of a personal preference, and being a "newbie", is
why I choose to post the question to the group.

I used Microsoft Powerpoint as an example before, so I'll continue with that
analogy. If you create a new presentation, you do not have a "palette"
hanging off the left side of the first slide. What you do get however is
mutliple toolbars that appear (which are user configurable) depending on
what you are editing. For example, if you are editing an image - the image
toolbar appears.

You state that I should "use a palette", what exactly are the reasons? (ie.
can it not be done otherwise?)
