One of the biggest problems with real, i.e. big, workflows is
their difficulty to be visualized in one piece, i.e. in one screen, and
therefore to work with/design them.
It would be comfortable to have the feature of chhosing the part of workflow
for shrinking/minimizing to one block, element. This make sense both for
graphic representation and serialization /exporting, importing part of
workflow). I think this also make sense for workflow engines.

I believe I saw it also in BPMN

Guennadi:

Yes, there is. Pool and lane of BPMN are useful for this. We can fold them
up to save space.

What I had in mind was WWF (.NET) composite activities though I found a
similar approach in Oracle JDeveloper (Drill-Down Diagram or Composite
Activity):

In comment to Fabrice's note in "Wrap Up" post:
"second, as Allen reported in reply to Guennadi, BPMN proposes to fold
up Pool and lane which would be helpful for addressing large workflows
which don't fit into one screen."

Well, I have 4-display monitor and the problem is not fitting in just one
screen...

Complex workflows is just impossible to arrange in any order and track in
designer.
They are a mess of connections ...
