Hi everyone,

I'm an expirienced C# programmer and recently I've been switched to Java
development. I tried to get known with eclipse environment and didn't
found the feature that seemed to me unquestionable for any code
development environment.

Feature: in any text editor press Ctrl+F (search) and if cursor is
positioned inside some word - this word is automatically becomes "find
what".

In eclipse you have to explicitly select some text, then press Ctrl+F to
force selected text to become "find what". To achieve required result you
have to press: Ctrl+Left, Ctrl+Shift+Right, Ctrl+F (select word then
search selection).

I tried to find some option like "search current word if nothing selected"
but failed.

This feature is very usefull when you navigate through some text. you can
quickly jump through keywords that you remember.
Ofcause there are alternate ways (one of them I've described) but all them
are very complicated and uncumfortable.

The question is: Is there such or alike feature in Eclipse? if not how do
you people (I mean Java developers) live without it?

I couldn't find the same feature in other popular ide - IDEA.
At the same time Borland and Microsoft IDE's include this feature for at
least 7 years (all my developer ages)

Hi Sergey,

I just had a look and this worked as expected (selection filled in the
"find" expression) it in I20060221-1300.

You can also use Ctrl(+Shift)+K to jump to the next (previous)
occurrence without opening the find dialog.

I'll try to find 3.1.2 (latest release) first (it might be in our corporate
network). then I'll download specified build.
Very big thanks!
When I have some result, I'll post it here.

Thanks for reminding, I knew that. and actually I use "find first" and "find
next" in combination almost anytime.

I tried Eclipse 3.1.2 - latest release build and there was no such feature.
As soon as I be able to download specified build (I20060221-1300) I'll try
it out.
But it seems that we'll wait until next release build (that includes
features of build I20060221-1300).

Oops, I was wrong - I misread your original post and thought it was just
about having the find expression filled if there is a selection.

What your request does not work currently. See
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=51223 for the
corresponding bug.
