XML Editor performance on linux [message #139021] Thu, 15 September 2005 17:17 Go to next message

I am having performance problems with the Webtools XML Editor on Linux.
This behavior is unexpected to me, as I am using a clean
Eclipse/Webtools installation on another clean Fedora/KDE/GTK. I have
been using the Webtools platform on a Windows configuration and
performance seems much better.

I have compared the Eclipse performance results for Windows and Linux,
and the Linux Version seems to beat the Windows one. At least that's
what I have concluded from the testing times (on the Eclipse test result
pages), which are 1623.939 for Linux/GTK and 2405.860 for Windows (when
I checked it... YMMV). So, I am assuming that the issue lies in the WTP
code.

WTP doesn't seem to have performance results measured in different
OSes, the only resource I managed to find was the Performance link under
the WTP download page -
http://apps.eclipse.org/webtools_performance/web/getScenario s.jsp.

When I try to save a XML file within the editor, the workbench shows the
"User operation is waiting for background work to complete" for a really
long time (more than one minute). Any workarounds for this?

Thanks,

Thiago Arrais

I am using WTP 0.7.

Couldn't get the latest integration build to run...

Sorry for the overlooked info.

Cheers,

Hi,

I usually experience these degraded builds when my network connection is
dropped or something like that, usually if XML file refers to a schema
that is not on the local machine.

Again, there might be other reason.

Well ... you could always "kill" that background process :)
(that's the red box ... not kill -9 :)

My guess is that something as "locked" the whole workspace, for a build
or a "deploy" and so the file is not allowed to be saved until that buil=
d
or "deploy" is finished. Or ... something similar to that ... I just mea=
n that
as an example. If you have any information about what that background jo=
b is
that it waiting on, that would be helpful.

Thanks.

Haroon was right. The problem was that I didn't set my catalog entries
on the Linux machine and the machine was searching through the 'net like
crazy.

I just needed to say Window > Preferences > Web and XML > XML Catalog
and enter the shortcut to my local DTD.

Thanks again,

Still sounds like a bug to me :)

I'm not sure if we see the same network connection/performance problem o=
n windows ..
so if anyone knows if we behave differently, please open a bug with good=
test
case.
Well, you can also just open one for slowness even if on both platforms,=

since on either platform, we're supposed to look every now and then, but=

not "like crazy".

Thanks.

I thought your editors cached network files? No?
