Problem importing profiling file [message #133896] |

To those who may kindly answer my question,
I am trying to profile a Java application of mine. For efficiency, I had
the profiling data sent to a file. However, the TPTP will not import the
file.
Specifically, I have followed the instructions in the help documentation
(Monitoring and profiling applications > Profiling an application >
Working with profiling resources > Importing profiling resources), but
when I click "Finish" nothing happens except a brief CPU spike. It appears
to be dying silently; no error dialog is presented and nothing is printed
on the parent terminal.
This happens regardless of whether I try to import the *.trcxml file or
the contents extracted (unzipped) from it.
Is there something I am missing and should be doing differently? Is this a
bug?
Thanks much for clarifying the situation.
Sincerely,
Aubrey Barnard

Eugene,
Sorry, I didn't figure you would need to know the details right away. Here
they are.
Environment:
OS: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 x86-64
Eclipse: 3.4.0 (Ganymede release) x86-64
Java: Sun's JDK 1.6.0-06 x86-64
TPTP (Platform Project): 4.5.0.v200804180100
TPTP (Tracing and Profiling Tools Project): 4.3.100.v200802291616
TPTP installed via the Software Updates feature in Eclipse.
The profiling file (*.trcxml) is 344M. I don't know whether this is large
or not, but the contents seem large. Unzipped, the contents are 3.6G.
Though the contents are in some sort of a binary format (encoded XML?),
they look sensible with recognizable paths, packages and other strings.
Still, I would hope the TPTP could deal with a file of this size. (It's
basically aggregating runtime data, which should consume a fairly constant
size of memory, right?) The unprofiled application takes less than 4
seconds to run which seems reasonable to try to profile. Furthermore, the
import doesn't work even if I tell it to only import the first 1% of the
profiling file.
The CPU spike I see when I try to import is quite short, implying that the
TPTP hasn't yet started to import the file contents.
Let me know if I can give you other helpful information, e.g. logs.
Thank you very much for helping me figure out this issue.
Aubrey

Hi Aubrey,
I have sent you a separate email for the trcxml file to be imported in a
Windows driver. I want first to make sure the validity of the file then we
can see if it's something with the driver itself. Please see my response in
a separate email to you account.
Eugene.
