I just downloaded the latest version of eclipse SDK, v3.1.1 and I tried
installing the eclipse RCP-3.1.1 binaries and source. I get the following
error in the log file.....(I can't cut-n-paste the contents b/c the dev
machine is classified).

!Entry org.eclipse.osgi 2006-01-24
!Message Application error
!STACK 1
java.lang.IllegalStateException: Unable to acquire application service
at
org.eclipse.core.runtime.adaptor.Eclipsestarter.run(Eclipses tarter.java:367)
at
org.eclipse.core.runtime.adaptor.Eclipsestarter.run(Eclipses tarter.java:163)
and more lines of the same stack trace dump....until you get to main
method.
at org.eclipse.launcher.Main.main(Main.java:948)

Bascially what I did was install eclipse on XP platform via unzip and
install the "eclipse-RCP-SDK-3.1.1-win32.zip" via unzip into eclipse
installation directory.

Any help is appreciated.

Don't install both. Either install RCP or the Eclipse SDK and make sure
unzip preserves the directory structure from the zip.
