emf_1.1.1_20031020_1612WL.zip
GEF-runtime-I20031015.zip
VE-runtime-0.5.0.zip
VE-examples-0.5.0.zip
and unzipped them into the eclipse directory. I verified that EMF and GEF
are installed. But there is nothing like File->New->Visual Class. And in
About in the configuration info, VE is not there, but only EMF and GEF.
What might be the reason and how can I get VE installed?
Thanks, Andi
PS: Linux GTK. There is nothing in my .log file

I suspected that my Eclipse was broken. So, I deleted the complete Eclipse
folder, and installed everything again: Eclipse 2.1.2, emf, GEF, then I
started. Everything okay. Then I unzipped VE into the eclipse directory,
started again, and -- nothing changed. No VE. I checked it in

But I do have these directories in my eclipse dir:

It is definitely not installed. Last night, after writing the posting, I
tried to install it under my Windows XP environment, and it worked like a
charm there. Visual Class etc, everything is immediately installed there.
Just now, I also tried it under my Redhat 9 Linux in my office, and, the
same as at home under my SuSE8.2 Linux: GEF and EMF install easily, but VE
does not show up at all.
This is the eclipse 2.1.2 build that I used here: 200311030802
I really want to have VE, because it looked great, great, great under
Windows. I just have to work under Linux... So, others should have these

Hi Peter,
I have the same problems (Eclipse 2.1.2, emf and gef from ve 0.5.0, fresh
install on fedora core 1, jsdk 1.4.2) and there's no ./metadata/.log file.
Configuration Details show no error, but shows no plugins from ve,
although the features and plug-ins are in the correct directories. About |
Feature details show no ve either. I guess something is wrong on packaging
the plugin.

Hi,
I?ve had similar problems installing VE. Check the permissions of the
unzipped files! (gef, emf, ve) On my box the unzipped files were lacking
permissions to be read by the user executing eclipse.

But the owner of those files were root. And my Eclipse runs under a

I'm using Red Hat 9 and I used File-Roller to unzip the files. I don't
know why my files had different permissions from yours.
Any other question? If permissions were not the real problem I would like
to know. Although my tool is working fine now, I may be obliged to
reinstall it in the future.
Thanks!

Mine, too. jem and ve were missing the right permissions.
chmod -R 755 * in the plugin directory works like a charm!

I don't know. I just tried it on my system. I went to root, set my umask
to 077 so that it was rwx----- and then unzipped eclipse. When I did
that, any directory that was not explicitly listed by itself in the zip
file (such as eclipse, features, and plugins) these directories had
rwx------ for their permissions. All of the other directories and files
(even the files within the eclipse, features, and plugins directories)
had the permissions that were listed in the zip file.
I did the same thing for ve and it unzipped fine. All of the permissions
for explicitly referenced directories, and all files were correct. Same
sort of thing that happened with eclipse. There was no instance of any
file that had rwx-------- as its permissions. Just a few directories.
However, in both cases I found some directories did not have the correct
permissions. Those were ones that were not specifically called out in
the zip file (I don't know why some directories where and others
weren't, but both eclipse and ve had these directories).
So basically I had the problem with Eclipse zip file too.

If this was an exisitng eclipse installation, you will need to go to
Help_>Update Contents->Process Detected Changed (this is a link on the

updates. You have to go and explicitly accept them. Nor does it notify
you that there are any waiting in your installation.

Andreas,
You seem to have the correct files (assuming the Eclipse core is 2.1.2).
But there is no File->New->Visual Class menu item in the workbench.
You should select File->New->Other... and then either click on 'Java' on the
left pane and select 'Visual Class' on the right one, or you could select
'Swing' or 'Awt' under 'Java' on the left pane and then you could create
Applications por Applets.
Another way to access the New Visual Class wizard is to click on the toolbar
button representing a class.
A last option is to create a new class, then when the java editor is closed,
right click on the generated file and select 'Open with'->'Visual Editor'
(it won't work if the class is already edited).
If none of these menu items exist, then the VE is definitely not installed.
Hope that helps,
--

Hi Peter,
I have the same problems (Eclipse 2.1.2, emf and gef from ve 0.5.0, fresh
install on fedora core 1, jsdk 1.4.2) and there's no ./metadata/.log file.
Configuration Details show no error, but shows no plugins from ve,
although the features and plug-ins are in the correct directories. About |
Feature details show no ve either. I guess something is wrong on packaging
the plugin.

I just installed it onto RedHat EL AS 3.0 at work and on RedHat 8.0 at
home and it works fine. The features and plugins show up.
GEF-runtime-I20031015.zip
eclipse-SDK-2.1.2-linux-gtk.zip
VE-runtime-0.5.0.zip
emf_1.1.1_20031020_1612WL.zip
IBM JDK 1.4.1 on RedHat EL
Sun J2SDK1.4.2_02 on RedHat 8 @home
Used a new install and a new workspace.

Peter,
This is very strange... I did again, fresh new install of Eclipse on a new
workspace, using the same files as you... and again no VE... what on it
could be a problem specific to fedora, different from other red hat
releases?

Have you looked at the permissions for the files. That seems to be a
common problem on IX systems. They should be readable by whoever is

Hi all!
The problem is really about permissions. To solve, you can do this:
1. Extract the files properly (of course);
2. Execute chmod in the extracted directories as follows
- features directory:
chmod 755 org.eclipse.ve_0.5.0 -R
chmod 755 org.eclipse.jem_0.5.0 -R
- plugins directory:
chmod 755 org.eclipse.ve* -R
chmod 755 org.eclipse.jem* -R
chmod 755 com.ibm.etools.emf* -R
Start Eclipse, execute the pending changes that will appear and have fun!

PS. I'm not sure if the permission 755 is the most restrictive... At least
works...

The reason I ask is because in the VE zips, I just checked this, the
permissions for files are -rw-r--r-- and directories drwxr-xr-x and in
the Eclipse zips they are -rw-rw-r-- and drwxrwxr-x That shouldn't be
enough of a difference to cause a problem, especially since your
permissions that you said you changed evertyhing to was -rwxr-xr-x
None of these different permissions would seem to prevent the files from
being read.
So it should of unzipped them correctly with these permissions.
When you unzipped the VE zips, what permissions showed up instead for
the VE files?

Files had the permissions -rw-------, and directories drwxr-xr-x.
But the owner of those files were root. And my Eclipse runs under a
common user. So Eclipse couldn't read features.xml, for example.
I'm using Red Hat 9 and I used File-Roller to unzip the files. I don't
know why my files had different permissions from yours.
Any other question? If permissions were not the real problem I would like
to know. Although my tool is working fine now, I may be obliged to
reinstall it in the future.
Thanks!

It is definitely permissions problem. But I don't understand why the
unzip of Eclipse and GEF and EMF didn't give you a problem. They are
build the same way.
Did you use a different mechanism to unzip the Eclipse, GEF, and EMF builds?
The permissions info is in the VE zip itself, maybe File-Roller isn't
pulling them out.
But I just can't understand why unzipping the Eclipse builds work and VE
doesn't.

Mine, too. jem and ve were missing the right permissions.
chmod -R 755 * in the plugin directory works like a charm!

For what it's worth, I have had permissions problems when unzipping
Eclipse itself using the Cygwin tools on Windows XP/NTFS. I get
permissions of rw-r--r-- on everything I think (it's on a company laptop
that I don't have handy right now to check).
Then I have to chmod 744 eclipse.exe and the SWT dlls before I can run.

You're right, the VE features and plug-ins had permissions -rwx------,
changing them to allow world-read (and world-execute for directories)
solved the problem. Anyway it seem to me as a packaging bug, because I
allways install eclipse and plugins as root on /opt, so many users can
share the same binaries, and this was the first time i had to manually fix
file permissions. GEF, EMF and others no not need this fix.

I unzipped eclipse, gef, emf and ve using the same sommand: unzip

Hi,
I tried installing VE on Windows for eclipse 3.0M7. I expanded the
Eclipse build I20040226: (build page) (download win32 zip)
EMF build 2.0.0: (build page) (download zip)
GEF Build 3.0M7: (build page) (download zip)
and then the
All VE-SDK-I20040226.zip
I still don't see the "New Visual Class" button. Any idea whats going
on?
thanks,
Vijay Kumar.

If this was an exisitng eclipse installation, you will need to go to

updates. You have to go and explicitly accept them. Nor does it notify
you that there are any waiting in your installation.
