Does your app use the Report engine or the Web Viewer?

What is the open source project? Is it downloadable? The Viewer is a
Java Web application that makes use of the report engine.

If you have access to the libs and plugins for the 2.3.2 you should be
able to upgrade by just using the birt 4.2 libs and removing the 2.3.2
plugins. The 4.2 runtime is a simple POJO based runtime and only
requires the set of jars in the runtime/reportengine/lib directory of
the runtime download. The only issue is that you need to remove the
config.setBIRTHome from your code. BIRT 4.2 also has an OSGi runtime
download if you would rather use it. If you decide to do this you could
just replace the libs and plugins from the 4.2 OSGi runtime download.

OSGi is the framework that eclipse runs on. It is used to dynamically
load plugins that the designer uses.
