Which technology/software BIRT uses internally for generation of pdf or excel reports? Can we add support for Adobe Lifecycle??

For PDF BIRT uses iText, the xls emitter uses internal code. There are
other xls emitters in the community that use POI.

Thanks for this helpful information. I also want to know if we can add support for Adobe Livecycle or any other open source for pdf or excel generation?

BIRT has extension points for just about everything :> The emitter
extension points allow a developer to add an emitter that they code to a
running system. Dev Share on birt-exchange.org has some examples of
people implementing their own emitters. In addition you may want to
have a look at the tribix emitters on source forge.
