Is there a way to get the tabs for the open source files to be
multilayered? I can barely read the names of the open files when I have
more than a trivial amount open. I'm looking for something similar to
the behavior of Windows or the Metal L&F.

There isn't, but there is a popular PR about your problem - search
bugzilla for it.
