I suggest you to start JConsole or VisualVM and try to investigate
Eclipse instance to see what happens wrong.
Maybe some threads are blocked by I/O. My personal experience is that
Eclipse P2 sites are, let me to say, "dead-slow" (modem speed).

Eclipse (or strictly speaking SWT toolkit) uses Gecko (Mozilla renderee)
on Linux, IE on Windows, and Safari on Mac OS. It's just a browser
embedded into SWT window and should be different in any way.
Also, you may try to troubleshoot HTTP traffic with something like
Wireshark.
