compiler output at the command line, but I cannot find it.

See my response to the thread titled "Building in Eclipse" - bottom line
is that you really should go through the Tutorials and Getting Started
guides in the Help.

I think you don't have the problems view open in the bottom pane. Hence
you are not getting to know anything.
