Hi,
I had BIRT 2.0RC2 and it worked fine, after I'd untangled all the
dependencies. I then upgraded to 2.0 final, and I can no longer view PDF
reports in the web viewer. I've followed the usual steps, prototype.js, Axis
and i-Text. I used the same versions of these as I used for 2.0RC2, and I
also tried to re-download i-Text, and to use the advance preview of i-Text
1.3.6.
No matter what I do, I can't get the little printer icon to show up on the
web viewer toolbar, and hence I can't get any PDF previews. Downgrading to
2.0RC2 fixes the problem though.
Am I missing something?

Yes, me too! No "print" icon - how did that disappear?
I have discovered that you can output PDF's to your browser, but you need to
use a URL like this?
http://someserver:8080/birt-viewer/run?__report=somereport.r ptdesign&__format=pdf
You can add your own parameter's etc. You need the run parameter, not the
frameset.
This gives you a PDF report.
So it's all there, but no way to do it from the menu bar.
I would really like the little icon back....it must be there
somewhere...c'mon guys, give it back...

The Print button was removed in the final 2.0 release build to address bug

In previous versions it was possible to generate PDF from the frameset
view, I wonder why that has disappeared.

Fair point, I agree I should've taken some more time to do this.
Unfortunately, my users won't read the bug either, and will wonder why BIRT
says it supports PDF but they can't get it in the default UI provided.
The bug does say "People can still generate the PDF output through URL", and
the old print button did use to open the window in a new window, and I can
get the report to work by manually appending the parameters to the query
string. I'm not sure how the particular AJAX library you're using works in
this respect, but I would've thought the handler for the parameters dialogue
that kicks of the RunAndRenderTask would be able to construct an appropriate
query string to the HREF of the <A> tag around the print button. This does
mean you need to run the HTML report first, but at least there's a way of
getting a PDF of what you see.
The thing that frustrates me though is that a major feature (a) had a
show-stopping bug in Release Candidate 2 that was a known issue and (b) got
removed between RC2 and Final. We made the decision to start using BIRT 2
seriously at M3, expecting some pain. We pushed out a version to our users
at RC2, thinking that this would be almost the same as the final release bar
any last-minute obscure bugs, only to find that a few days later one of the
features we depended on disappeared. Now we'll have to make workarounds for
this problem. Had the RC been a more true reflection of what we could expect
in the final product, we would simply have made different decisions,
different estimates on how long it would take us to deliver the
functionality asked for, and promoted the product differently internally.
I realise this may seem a bit unfair to you, and you're in your right to be
defensive. I'm bitching, basically. But I represent the type or organisation
I would like to think you'd want to have as users and as promoters of BIRT,
and I'm giving you an account of my experience with BIRT, nothing more. Am I
too perhiperhal to BIRT's community? Possibly. Am I an atypical user? I
wouldn't have thought so. I write this in the hope that it'll be taken as
constructive criticism, to improve the process the next time around. And
once again, I'd like to reaffirm that I am truly impressed by what BIRT has
achieved. I'm writing this because I badly want it to succeed.
Thanks,
Martin

I have got round this by doing the following:
Added an image to my report ( I have used the usual Adobe PDF image, but it
could be a printer image)
Given this image a hyperlink, which is defined as a drill down report to
itself .
Added the parameters to the list, and given them the same report parameters
as itself.
Given a target of blank to get a new browser window, and a format of PDF.
Voila! A PDF version of your report. Basically calling itself but this time
in a new window with a format of PDF.

Just want to clraify, the PDF generation is not removed from BIRT 2.0.
Inside the BIRT designer, you can directly invoke the PDF viewer to generate
and view a report in PDF format. When you deploy the BIRT viewer to an
application server, you can easily generate and view a report through URL as
some other message suggested. Any way, most applications will invoke the
BIRT viewer application through URL.

I am not sure this still works, when I am in the Report Designer and hit
Ctrl + I to preview as PDF I get the following realy meaningful message.
Error happened while running the report
There is nothing in the eclipse workspace log.
Any Ideas

Martyn,
Make sure when you extracted the jars from the Axis archive that you did not
use the "with folders" option. Make sure these six jars are directly in the
