"Pluggable Filesystem" out of Eclipse 3.0? [message #112048] Mon, 18 August 2003 16:26 Go to next message

I remember in an old version of the 3.0 Plan, there was an item on a
"Pluggable Filesystem" that will allow resources in something other than
the local file system (such as in an SCM, say) to show up as a resource
in the resource hierarchy.

Has that completely dropped out of the plan for 3.0? I no longer see
that listed in the plan.

I am very interested in that item actually and am disappointed to see it go.

I think you are referring to

( new) Support logical resources. The Eclipse Platform supports a strong
physical view of projects, files, and folders in the workspace. However,
there are many situations where a physical view is not the most salient or
useful for many purposes. In some cases, multiple distinct objects happen to
be stored in a single file, like an archive. Conversely, in other cases,
something that is logically a single object is stored across multiple files.
This discrepancy between logical and physical creates problems for common
operations such as searching, comparing, and versioning, which need to work
in the physical realm. Eclipse should support some way of mapping between a
logical view and the physical organization of files on disk. [Platform Core,
Platform UI] (37723)

which is still on the plan.

Hi PaScaL

Thanks for the response. I actually did see this item, but didn't make
the connection that this might be the same plan item that I was looking
for.

I think the logical (as opposed as a physical) resource concept could
be very powerful and I'm definitely looking forward to using it. Is it
currently implemented in 3.0 M2 already? What are the affected classes
in the code?

Could this be used to point to resources that does not live in the local
filesystem at all (like remote files, or files that reside in an SCM)?

As far as I know, this is still being specified. A RFC will be issued when
it will be ready.
To follow the progress I advise you to cc yourself to the bug and to
subscribe to the eclipse-dev mailing list.

Michael,

The item you are asking about is not a committed item on the 3.0 plan.
It is still in the plan as a proposed item (see Improve team control
over resource operations).
